We have all seen those tv shows that someone comes in and have been stuck in a look for years, and they get together experts that take that person in hand and help create a personalized transformation that we all wow over.
Have you noticed that most of those people have gotten there by convenience and putting their time and energy into other things as opposed to themselves? They never set out to get stuck in a rut and not changing with the times. It was the easy thing to do. They got into a routine that they do unconsciously so that they could quickly move onto other areas of their lives.
As midlife women, we find several areas of our lives that fit into that mold. We go through our day-to-day and wake up each year and realize that nothing has changed. We are usually so focused on our family, work and other commitments that we just find it easier to put ourselves last. After all, women are the caregivers.
Then life naturally happens and midlife brings upon us changes that puts floodlights on those areas that are in need of a makeover. We become empty nesters, some of us find our intimate relationships changing even to the point of divorce, our career becomes unsatisfying, and/or are parents are aging and we find our roles reversing to help age gracefully. A lot of us find ourselves asking “who am I and who do I want to be?” Along with some of us start noticing spiritual disconnection and need to go searching to regain that connection and expand upon it.
The saying that you cannot pour from an empty cup is true. We give, and give, and give to the point where we can not give anymore because we are just completely tapped out.
There is true grace in giving, but you need to give to yourself and your own wellbeing first so that you will have even more to give to those you love.
I know for myself, what I felt as my dream life and how that picture unfolded in my twenties and thirties is not even close to the picture now that I am fifty. That is perfectly normal. As we move into different phases of our lives our vision naturally change just like the changes in fashion, hair and makeup have changed.
So, look at the different areas of your life and be brutally honest with yourself on which ones are stuck in an outdated rut, which ones are just existing, and which ones are gorgeously working. Now if you have 1980’s, 90’s or early 2000’s energy in and around an area in your life – it’s time for a makeover!
